Marrakesh wedding legal requirements
Who can legally marry in Morocco, who cannot, and why most couples sign at home first.
The short version
Most foreign couples cannot legally marry in Morocco. Marry at your registry office at home, then hold a symbolic ceremony in Marrakesh with the officiant and vows you choose.
Who can marry here
- UK citizens: only if the partner is Moroccan, with paperwork via the British consulate and the Moroccan family court.
- French citizens: consulates require at least one partner to be resident in Morocco and Muslim.
- US, Belgian, Canadian citizens: embassies perform no marriages in Morocco.
What a symbolic ceremony needs
Nothing from the Moroccan state. Your planner books an officiant or a friend leads it, and you sign a keepsake certificate. Guests rarely notice the difference.
Timeline
Book the registry office at home three to six months ahead. Many couples do it the week before flying, others months earlier to simplify name changes and travel documents.
